I really enjoyed this novel, renowned for being one of the best works of the East German writer Christa Wolf and for its portrayal of East. On its own, I’m not sure it would really engage someone coming from the outside. Following her love, or geteilre hope for a better life in an idealistic and religious sense of the word? As a German I admire your strong will and power for this monthly challenge and your selection of books.
Jun 04, Drea rated it it was amazing. It was a great view of how people were torn apart by the building of the Wall, but more importantly of the Eastern viewpoint to Berlin’s division.

The novel Leibhaftig of based its story on a similar initial constellation: But during the months of working in the factory and observing the daily lives of people around her she has pulled away from Manfred and started to develop her own ideas and frienships.
I have to admit I found it hard to get into the book, but that’s partly because the central character is recovering from a breakdown and her perspective is chirsta woolly. There are some wonderfully quotable bits here, and occasionally lyric passages.
