I can understand the impact that Fante’s colloquial style might have had at the time he published itbut, now, it is simply impossible to read Ask the Dust without thinking that Fitzgerald and Hemingway joh him and Salinger, Kerouac, Carver and many others after him got far beyond John Fante in it.
