Alex represents the former, and Cameron the latter – the book is almost a metaphorical struggle for Scotland’s future, distilled down to two people. There is no depths to which he will not sink, including parading his mistress before his wife in name only, and being absolutely physically, sexually and emotionally so cruel that I started rooting for the Other Man in this scenario.
Her hero, Lord Alex Sinclair, is one of the next generations of Scotsmen who decided it was more pragmatic to bend the knee to the English no matter the wound to his personal pride mapcolm nationalistic fervor.

Also, the villain of the piece, Sinclair’s odious mistress Fiona, is not given ,alcolm very deserved comeuppance and even worse, she is apparently very much a continuing nuisance in the next book, which makes this reader very unsure whether to continue with this saga. I just got really bored toward the end and it was hard for me to finish it.

For the next pages all we see is him acting aleeb a dog, being abusive to his mistress and some poor, hungry 16 year old prostitute he picks up off the streets. The only good character was the dog. I don’t think me and the Highlands are ever meant to be; I’ve tried several but can never get into them. So begins a tug of war as Kat tries to escape to get back to her brother and sister and Darach fearlessly hangs on, all the while trying to solve the mystery behind his wee bride and his missing brother.
Kat’s only twelve or aleeb when the story begins, and on the death of her mother in a run-down hovel, her father decides it’s time to sneak back into Scotland and take revenge on the clan he blames for all their woes Until that windswept night when the emerald-eyed, fiery-spirited Cameron charged into his world atop a rearing black stallion On his death bed, Fraser leaves the guardianship of his “bairn” Cameron to Sinclair, who balks at being saddled with a 12 year old highland savage brought up to hate the English and keep to the old ways of the Scots.
